Racism and Defeating It with Self-esteem.

CNN reported a recent incident of racist attack on East Asian student (A 23-year-old Singapore man of Chinese ethnicity) in London linked with corona virus.  The victim posted his comment on his Facebook account with his deep thoughts on a whole race issue.  The crime took place on a weekday 9.15pm on Oxford Street in London.  A group of “no older than 20 years old” had suddenly attacked him passing by on one of the busiest streets in central London.  He comments “To those people who told me that London isn’t racist, think again”.

It is not my first time hearing of such horrible crimes committed against people of racial minority and similar incidents involved some of my closest friends in the past.
Just imagine what damage this could give to UK when young and hopeful people coming from all over the world believing it is in UK that they want to learn from, that they want to be educated by are one day going back to their homes and think of UK long after in their lives.  It saddens me to write this side of the Great Britain a country where I myself spent many years in and a place I'm so fond of.
They say the Roman Empire collapsed by losing tolerance in societies.  When a civilization starts to fall apart, it begins with an intolerance in the society.  Intolerance diffusing concepts that immigrants cannot live next to us because they invade our land, because they look like they are lower human being so they must be less worthy and this our land belongs only to us.

For above incident it’s reported the perpetrators were no older than 20 years old.  How do we tackle this issue?  Is education the key?  Education is always the key, I can’t think of anything quite else as effective.  But what kind of education then required for those young angry ones?  If I am to come up with one answer, I say teaching to live with a self-esteem.  I can’t help but to think that it was a lack of self-confidence the main motivation behind such violent acts.  It is only by finding someone positioned lower than themselves; their class, race, skin color, education, VISA status or poverty level, that they can gain self-centered reassuring.  By comparing themselves with the others.  For this case by attacking some East Asian size wise smaller.  With this act they gain crooked self-reassuring that they are somehow better as human being that they can place themselves higher than other people.

Being you, not comparing with somebody else, but being only yourself is a cool thing.  This needs to be taught as a basic principle to the level that it sticks to them naturally.  It was England’s poet, Alfred Tennyson said “Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control; these three alone lead life to sovereign power.”

The victim of above incident concludes his sophisticated and eloquent post by words below.
“I just want to say I hope we can all work together to stamp out racism in this world (regardless of whom it is against) and build a better future!”
