Earthquake Refuge Monument by the Shin Ohashi

 2022. 6. 15.

Just by the side of "The Shin Ohashi" (literally translated "New Big Bridge"), there sits a 5 meter tall monument which was built in 1933, a decade after one of the biggest earthquakes ever happened in recent Japan, the Great Kanto Earthquake.

In 1923, when the Great Kanto Earthquake hit the area, people sought refuge on this bridge.  While most of the other bridges over the Sumida River were burnt down by fire, the Shin Ohashi survived without serious damage and it saved the lives of many people who took refuge.

Since then the Bridge is therefore commonly known as "Saving Bridge".
