BIRTHPLACE OF SEAFARER EDUATION

Toshimichi Okubo, one of the founding fathers of modern Japan, home affairs minster then, advocated an urgent need for seafarer education in order to promote the independent shipping reform of the Meiji government.  
So ordered Yataro Iwasaki, the head of the Mitsubishi company, to open a commercial shipping school in this area in November 1888.  

This stone monument was placed in year 1975 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its foundation of now known as Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.   

Another trace of history quietly placed in every corners of Tokyo.
