You could say "oden" is a type of Japanese stew.  You can put various ingredients like fishcake and vegetables.   We would usually have them in the winter as they warm us in the cold days.  But having it in the midst of summer is equally enjoyable.  Cold sake to go along would cool us anyway.   
Usage of ingredient from each seasonal harvest is another characteristic of this country's fine cuisine.
